FREE & FRUGAL Summer Activities for the Kids

Some are free, some are frugal.  If you have other ideas, please be sure to leave them in the comments!!

Read Read Read!!  Be sure to check out your local library for FUN Summer activities & programs they offer.  Many offer a range of fun classes, storytime, and more for ALL AGES – babies to teens!  Or, just head over and grab lots of books to read.  We spend about 2 hours a week at the library just looking and reading books and enjoying the fun kids games they offer on the computers.

Swim swim swim!  We have a pool at our home and we will be in it most of the summer.  It keeps the kids busy and usually wears them out pretty well.  We have friends over once a week to swim too.  So if you don’t have a pool….maybe a friend does?? Or check out the YMCA in your town  Tips: don’t forget sunscreen! If you swim alot like us, beware of Swimmer’s Ear (it’s no fun) ask your doctor for info.

Splash Pads - Many areas now offer splash pads/water areas at their public parks.  These are a MUST for us.  We can’t go to the park in Florida in the summer without a way to continually cool off (unless we go at 7am or 9pm lol) To find out more contact your local Parks & Recreation division in your area.  Don’t forget sunscreen!!

$1 Movies at the Theater:  Regal is offering kids movies all summer at MANY locations for just $1 per ticket!  Check your local listings HERE

Bowling: Kids bowl for FREE all summer at AMF Bowling lanes (shoes not included).  Register HERE.

Vacation Bible School: check your local church locations for dates/times.  Many are FREE!

Go on a walk:  What better way to get in some exercise & family time + some education than a nice nature walk!  If it’s overly humid you may want to do this in the early eve or first thing in the morning.

Treasure Hunt: I do this with my kids year-round.  I make a list of things the kids need to find outside (or incorporate this into your family walk).  I give them a plastic bag and off they go.  They find things like rocks, leaves, pinecones, and more.  Fun & FREE!

Teach them to cook/bake:  Now that the kids are free from homework, baseball practice, youth group meetings, etc, they are home during all the meal time prep.  Let them help!  It will keep them busy and they will learn while having fun.

Have a theme day: We have theme days during the summer-once a week.  For example, the last week of June we have Patriotic Day where we dress in red, white, and blue.  We make crafts using red, white, and blue.  I then decorate with all the crafts for 4th of July!  Other ideas:  beach day, Christmas in July,  Cupcake Day (bake & decorate cupcakes and cupcake pictures).  Have crafts ready, word searches, printouts, paint, and more ready!

Volunteer: Children of any age can volunteer.  Small children can bring a smile to the face of nursing home residents!  Older children can pick up litter at the local park.  Donate to your local food pantry (great way to get the kids to help clean out the pantry!)  Bake a treat for an elderly neighbor or make a meal for a new mom.

Camp-in: Too hot to camp out?  Camp in the living room.  Grab sleeping bags and tell stories.  Have a fire place? Roast some marshmallows!  Sing songs.   Or if it’s not too hot, camp on the back porch or back yard.  FUN!

These are just a few ideas that we do every summer as a family.  Have more ideas to add? Be sure to leave them in the comment section below!

Frugal and Free Fitness

Keeping in shape doesn't have to cost you a lot of money. With these money saving health and fitness ideas below you and your family can start out 2012 by getting in shape FOR FREE or almost FREE! Plus, working out as a family brings you closer together and helps keep you motivated!

CHEAP WORK OUT ITEMS:

These items can transform even the area between your TV and coffee table into a fully functional gym. Stash them in a closet or a bin under the bed when you’ve finished your workout. Some of these items can be purchased at Walmart for next to nothing. You can also check out Thrift Shops and Garage Sales to find them even cheaper!

Resistance Tubing/Bands

“Tubes are a compact alternative to weights,” says Brooke Marrone, a personal trainer in New York City, so you can use them for full-body strength training. They come in different resistance levels. For about $30, you can get a set containing weights that are light (for when you’re just starting), medium (for upper- and lower-body work), and heavy (for more intense lower-body training). Tip: Look for padded handles to ensure proper grip, which will help you to maintain good form. I found a set here for under $11 and it comes with a door attachment and exercise charts!

Jump Rope

Inexpensive (about $8 or LESS) and lightweight, a jump rope is one of the easiest tools for high-intensity cardio. “ Jump for 30 seconds or more in between sets of upper- and lower-body resistance work,” says Marrone. Bonus: Circuit training burns extra calories. If you have a Dollar Tree or Dollar Store nearby you can find jump ropes for only $1.00! You can also GO HERE and find various types of jump ropes, different colors, sizes and more for under $6.oo!

Yoga Mat

The slightly sticky surface keeps you stable during stretching and core-strengthening moves, such as planks. “If you’re slipping on a carpet, you end up gripping with the wrong muscles to stay balanced,” says Marrone, and this can lead to injury. Mats start at about $15. I actually found some colorful Yoga Mats HERE for under $12.00! OR Learn how to make a FREE one here: How to Make a Yoga Mat | eHow.com and Yoga Mat Bag - DIY Craft Project Instructions

DVDs

If you need a motivation boost or are looking for new routines, try a workout DVD ($10 to $30 each). “You get to exercise with a top trainer for 30 to 60 minutes right in your home,” says Marrone. You can also expand your repertoire of moves (and hit more muscles) if you check out a new DVD every week or two. Browse online or in bookstores, or hit up your local library to rent them for FREE. Here is another great place to find any type of workout DVD you are looking for. Some as low as $6.00! Some come with exercise/fitness gear!

Set of Dumbbells

“Dumbbells give your workouts variety,” says Rachel Cosgrove, author of The Female Body Breakthrough ($22, amazon.com). And they can also challenge your muscles more than gym machines do because you have to stabilize yourself to lift them. Start with a basic range—say, a set of 5-, 8-, 10-, and 15-pound dumbbells (sets cost about $5 per pound). Increase the weight as you get stronger. I have founds some at Kmart and Walmart for under $5.00 and you can also go HERE and find a huge variety at discount prices! Also, check out Thrift Shops and Garage Sales to get them even cheaper! You can even make your own - How to Make Your Own Dumbbell | Fine Craft Guild .com.

Stability Ball

For improving balance, flexibility, and strength while working multiple muscle groups, this blow-up wonder (about $25) can’t be beat. “Your core is engaged with every exercise you do on it,” says O’Neal, including crunches, biceps curls, and incline push-ups. A 65-centimenter ball is right for most people; go with 55 if you’re short, 75 if you’re very tall. You can go HERE and find various sizes and colors for around $7.00 - $20.00! I like the pink and red ones!

TOTALLY FREE, ALMOST FREE OR CHEAP GYM MEMBERSHIPS:

How to Find a FREE Gym Membership

Use these clever money-saving strategies to keep both you and your wallet in shape.

FREE GYM PASSES ONLINE:

Several Gyms offer potential customers FREE Gym passes so you can try out their facility to see if you like it. Most free passes are 7-21 days depending on the Gym. There is absolutely no charge to you! You can even sign up family members!

HERE ARE THE TOP FREE GYM PASSES:

#1. 24 HR FITNESS - They offer a FREE printable seven day pass to any of their 24 Hr Fitness Gyms. Go HERE to register and print out your free pass!

#2. BALLY'S OR GOLD'S GYM PASS FOR A YEAR - sign up and get a FREE pass for a year!

Scout out other gyms in your area and ask about discounts. Then, ask your gym of choice to match. Now’s the best time to search, since so many fitness clubs have January specials. (If you convinced the gym you’re interested in to simply drop its joining fee, you could save as much as $50 to $200.)

Exploit Your Insurance

Some health plans provide discounts on gym memberships, so research yours. An example: Blue Cross Blue Shield’s Care First provides up to 60 percent off membership fees. You could save as much as $360 per year, if you usually pay $50 per month.

Mooch Off Your Company

Many companies offer gym deals for employees, as working out lowers health care costs. For instance, Prudential allows employees to save $20 per month off of memberships at New York Sports Club.

Be Flexible (About How You Get Flexible)

Some gyms offer lower rates if you go at non-peak hours. These special rates often aren’t advertised, so ask.

Run With the Club

Runners clubs are overlooked gems. These organizations help you find races and provide a running community. Don’t worry about being Olympic-caliber; many clubs have events for beginners. Road Runners Club of America offers individual memberships for $25 per year, while the marathon group 50&DC Marathon Group USA costs $10 for a lifetime membership. Many Meetup.com running clubs are free, too, though some charge small fees.

Use Workout Apps

Mapmyrun.com helps you find running routes, and its iPhone app tracks calorie usage and logs workouts. iPod Nano, Touch, or iPhone users can nab a personal training regimen from Nike for $29, which tracks time, distance, pace, and calories burned.

Christmas Ornament Dough: Recipes for Homemade Ornaments

I do this with my kids. Here's a few different dough recipes you can use to make homemade ornaments. I use the first one which is a basic salt and flour dough recipe.

Christmas Ornament Dough: Recipes for Homemade Ornaments -

The Christmas ornament dough recipes on this page are for several different types of ornament dough, including ornaments made from salt, oatmeal, cornstarch, and spices. If you're looking for a specific recipe for cinnamon ornament dough, you'll find that --and instructions for making homemade cinnamon ornaments-- here! LINK

Salt-Based Dough for Christmas Ornaments

Homemade Christmas Ornaments RecipesYou remember that dough you used as a kid to make three-dimensional maps in school? This homemade Christmas ornament recipe is exactly the same stuff! And it's just as good for making Christmas decorations as it was for all of your elementary school products. It's also easy and ultra cheap.

Ingredients:
4 cups flour
1 cup salt
1.5 cups water

Mix: Mix the flour, salt and water together until well combined.

Create: Roll this dough out on a floured surface where you can cut out whatever shapes you want (cookie cutters are the perfect way to do this!). Alternatively, you can make three dimensional decorations (like snowmen) by using a ball of the salt dough and carving it into whatever images you want. You'd be amazed at how detailed you can get here.

Remember to build in a hole through which you can thread a ribbon or string so the final ornament hangs properly. (The end of a straw is good for this.)

Bake: When you're done making the basic image you'll need to bake your Christmas ornament dough at 300 degrees for half an hour.

Decorate! Once removed from the oven, cool your ornaments completely before adding paint or glitter. Hint: Nail polish makes awesome glossy paint, and it comes in wonderful Christmas colors.

Note: By the way, some people add 1 tbs. vegetable oil to this mix so it forms more of a "clay" – you can try it both ways to see which result you like best.

Applesauce & Spice Christmas Ornament Dough

This homemade Christmas ornaments recipe begins with applesauce to which you can add other favorite seasonal aromatics. It's pretty similar to the Cinnamon Ornament Dough you'll find here LINK, though there are some changes to the mix. This one is simpler to make, but may be a little more delicate than the one linked to above.

This doesn't make all that many ornaments, so I'd suggest doubling or tripling the recipe.

Ingredients:
1 cup Applesauce
1 1/2 cups ground ginger, allspice, cinnamon and clove (mixed as desired)

Mix: In a large mixing bowl, mix your ingredients together. If your dough seems crumbly you can add more applesauce or even just plain water.

Create: As with the Salt dough, you can use this to make 2-dimensional or 3-dimensional ornaments.

Cook: Once shaped the dough needs to cook for an hour at 200 degrees F., then cool completely before decorating. You can also leave the ornaments to air dry for several days if you have the time.

Decorate! Decorate as desired with glitter, paint, googly eyes, cotton pom-poms, you name it. You can even recycle old holiday cards or wrapping paper by taking colorful cuttings from them, gluing them to the ornament, then adding a few clear final coats of paint (decoupage style).

Oatmeal Christmas Ornament Dough

This dough has a texture similar to the salt clay. It can also be colored so you can make homemade Christmas ornaments of all colors.

Ingredients:
1 cup oatmeal (not instant)
2/3 cup flour
1/2 cup water
Food coloring

Mix: Mix your dough together, adding more flour or water to get the texture desired. Food coloring can go into this mix-- strongly pigmented food colorings, like past food coloring, tend to work best.

Shape: Shape as desired using cookie cutters or rolling into different shapes.

Dry: This dough requires no cooking – just let it dry completely at room temperature for 24 hours.

Decorate! Paint and design as desired. When tinting this Christmas ornament dough, you can tint the whole batch, or you can cut the dough into small balls and color each differently. For example, you could make red and green dough to make a 2-d Christmas tree with red bulbs on it.

Christmas Ornaments Made with Salt Dough

Cornstarch Dough Homemade Christmas Ornament Recipe

Last but not least this Christmas ornament dough makes pieces that have a shiny porcelain finish. Note that you shouldn't try to make anything too bulky with this mix as the end result is more fragile than the other recipes provided here. Flat ornaments made with cookie cutters tend to turn out best.

Ingredients:
2 cups baking soda
2 cups corn starch
1 cup plus a little, cold water

Mix: Mix the baking soda, corn starch and water together in a pot over a low flame. Stir constantly until you're happy with the texture of the dough. You can add color to this base if desired.

Cool and Shape: Let cool slightly and shape as desired. Note that when shaping cornstarch dough Christmas ornaments, you'll want to fashion the item larger than you want-- it'll shrink by about 30%.

Dry: The final ornament will need to dry for 2 days at room temperature before you decorate it. The surface of cornstarch dough can be sanded for a smoother look, if desired.

Decorate! These white ornaments look pretty left plain, or with a little bit of glitter or silver paint along the edges. Or you could make something like a snowman with full painted features. Whatever you like!
